9th of July protests in Tehran

Huffington Post has a very good report with videos and comments about the protests that has been going on yesterday (9th of July) in Tehran.
Zeitoon has also written a nice report (in Persian with photos) about the protests in Tehran yesterday, 9th of July.

Around 4 we started moving towards Vali Asr square, sidewalks were full of people with masks on the faces carrying bottles of water. From time to time you could hear jokes about Ahmadinejad’s “Free Election” quote on TV a few nights ago or about the fly that attacked him during his speech.
The presence of Police increased as we were closing to Vali Asr sq. In the square Police were attacking people with batons to scatter them and avoid a big group of people getting together.
I saw an old lady (around 90) with her grandchildren walking. When we told her to take care not to be hit with batons she answered dying is better than such life.

Anothre proof of Basiji’s shooting at protestors

While the Iranian government is repeating in national media that Police and Basiji’s never shoot at protestors and they accuse of foreign countries and protestors of “staging the Killing of Neda” another video captured by citizens has been published on Aljazira television showing the Basiji’s shooting at protestors from the roof of a building.

Meanwhile the Dr. Hejazi that was present at the moment when Neda was shot has talked to BBC about the series of actions that resulted in Neda being shot dead. You can watch this interview here.

Tank Man: Reveal the Truth

20 years after the Tiananmen square protest and subsequent masacure we still don’t know what happened to this brave and defiant man, who stood alone to confront a column of tanks.

Sign the Amnesty International’s campaign and ask the Chinese government to reveal the truth about Tianames square.

I haven’t updated for some time, so I thought I’ll share this amazing performenace on Britain Got talent. Jamie who is a van driver and suffers from stage fright sings Bring him home from Le miserable. I get goosebumps anytime I listen to it! So here is the video (embedding the video is disabled by Youtube). Here is his fan site, I wish him good luck in the semi finals! I think he is even better than Susan Boyle as Susan knew how good she is and has recorded music before!

Defy torture

Amnesty International has released another short anti-torture ad and asks everybody to join Amnesty to defy torture. The advertisement is really effective. So if you’re not a member of Amnesty International after watching the video think of Joining Amnesty international with as few as 2 Euro’s a month and help defying torture.

New findings on deep-sea fish with tubular eyes and transparent head

Teaching Creationism in Germany

A friend of mine send me a video documentary in YouTube (Von Göttern und Designern, Christlicher Fundamentalismus part 1) about a School in Germany in which they teach “Intelligent Design” in parallel to Evolution theory. Although they teach both “theories” to children the school teacher says that he believes in creationism and as a result influences the opinion of the students. Unfortunately the Documentary is only in German so if you can understand German here is the first part of it.
The funniest (or the saddest) part of it is about a Museum in the US where in an interview one of the museum workers explains that “the Dianasours were vegetarian in Heaven and used their teeth and nails to pick and eat heavenly fruits!”.
Yesterday I also read PZ Myers post about the Gaurdian’s article on British creationism, it seems that they are invading Europe seriously.

Beating peaceful protestors does not uphold the Olympics values
Amnesty International (UK) has launched the second video of “Human Rights For China” campaign. They’ve used the viral launch to highlight the case of Huang Qi, a 45 years old cyber-dissident who runs the www.64tianwang.com website and has been detained since 10 June. Huang Qi was having dinner at a local restaurant in Chengdu with two volunteers from his organisation, the Tianwang Human Rights Centre, when several men – believed to be plainclothes police – forced them into a vehicle and took them away. Since then no-one’s been able to see him or speak to him: which means he’s at real risk of torture.
